A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
