Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
