The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being declared a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
