In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
